What Is Regulated Medical Waste?

There are four main categories of medical waste, including Sharps, Biological Waste, Cultures and Stocks and Pathological Waste. The Bloodborne Pathogens Standard uses the term, "regulated waste," to refer to the following categories of waste:

  • Liquid or semi-liquid blood or other potentially infectious materials (OPIM);
  • Items contaminated with blood or OPIM and which would release these substances in a liquid or semi-liquid state if compressed;
  • Items that are caked with dried blood or OPIM and are capable of releasing these materials during handling;
  • Contaminated sharps; and
  • Pathological and microbiological wastes containing blood or OPIM.

Proper Handling

If your facility generates any of the above types of medical waste, you are required as a matter of law to follow certain procedures to properly package and dispose of your waste. Following are general guideline and we recommend that you take all steps to ensure that you are complying with your individual state regulations.

  • You must segregate medical waste from other waste at the point of generation;
  • You must clearly identify containers as infectious waste; and
  • You must store the medical waste in the appropriate OSHA or DOT approved containers.

General guidelines in packaging “Red Bag” medical waste:

  • Line your container with the red bag prior to use;
  • Tie the bag when the container is full and ensure that it is hand-tied by gathering and twisting the neck of the bag;
  • Secure the lid on the container and ensure that all closure and/or locking mechanisms are in place and red bags are not visible once the container is closed; and
  • Check the container markings and ensure that all federal markings, including biohazard symbol, this-side-up-arrows, regulated medical waste, N.O.S., and UN number are present.

General guidelines in packaging “Sharps” waste:

  • Place sharps in a puncture-resistant container designed for sharps waste and do not allow loose sharps in any waste container other than the sharps container;
  • Securely close the container; and
  • Place disposable containers in the red bag waste and schedule for a pickup right away. Please note that reusable sharps containers do not go in the red bag.
